Metallurgical Evaluation

METALLURGICAL EVALUATION

Our Commercial Metallurgical Laboratory integrates a complex package of testing services for our customers. We offer:

  • Sectioning and analysis of parts induction heat treated at our facility as part of our development projects. This allows ITI to validate the process and tooling without interrupting your production operation.
  • Sectioning and analysis of parts induction hardened at your facility to validate whether they make specification. We can also make recommendations on how to change your process parameters and/or inductor to make specification if needed.
  • Provide on-going metallurgical testing for process validation if testing is required per a specific number of parts processed.
  • We specialize in the testing of ferrous metals with particular expertise in induction and atmosphere heat treating process validation and troubleshooting.

Our fully equipped Metallographic Lab includes the ability to section and machine larger cross section parts, including large ball races. We operate a comprehensive machining facility along with our laboratory operations.

Our Metallurgical Lab staff includes a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio with over 25 years heat treating and testing experience and a lead journeyman capable of building and modifying any induction related inductors or fixturing.

The ITI Metallurgical Lab is accredited to ISO 17025 by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA).

METALLOGRAPHIC TESTING INCLUDES:

MACROETCHING

Technical Standard: ASTM E384

Test Overview: Visualize the hardness profile in case hardened parts and to measure visual case depth.

ROCKWELL HARDNESS

Technical Standard: ASTM E18

Test Overview: Measure hardness at a specific location or on the part surface.

MICROHARDNESS (VICKERS)

Technical Standard: ASTM E384 & SAE J423

Test Overview: Measure effective case depth (ECD) and surface hardness.

GRAIN SIZE MEASUREMENT

Technical Standard: ASTM E112 & E1382

Test Overview: Measure the size of the grains in the metal structure. Enlarge grain size indicates if overheating might have occurred during heat treatment.

MICROETCHING

Technical Standard: ASTM E407

Test Overview: Used to indentify the type of microstructural phases present in the metal structure.

PHOTOMICROSCOPY

Technical Standard: ASTM E883

Test Overview: Capturing the microstructure into a picture format for technical discussions and preservation of information.

SAMPLE PREPARATION

Technical Standard: ASTM E3

Test Overview: Prepares metal sample for evaluation of microstructure, grain size or for microhardness testing Preparation includes sectioning, matallurgical mounting and polishing the metal sample.
